CV and Motivation

Born in Bangladesh in 1938, Prof S. M. Deen got his PhD in 1965 from Imperial College (London) in Particle Physics, the area in which he had carried out research for a number of years, before moving into Computer Science in 1970. He is at present Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at the University of Keele, England. He is the first person in the UK and second in the world to write a book on Computer Databases – a book that has been translated into several languages, including Chinese, Dutch, Italian and Spanish. Some people call him the father of database research in the UK, because of his pioneering research activities in that area, including holding of international conferences and creating the British National Conference on Databases (the BNCOD series) which runs the UK database research conference every year since 1981. He is an authority in distributed data & knowledge bases and is continuing research even now in his retirement, with collaborative projects with Japan and elsewhere. He has published over 100 substantial research papers and written many books on Computer Science. He also has founded two charities, one for PhD students from developing countries at Keele and the other for a school in Bangladesh. He comes from a sufi Sayyed family.

His major work on Islam is the book entitled: Science Under Islam – Rise, Decline and Revival, published by Lulu.com in 2007. The book describes the rise of science (and technology) in the Islamic Golden Age, examines the causes that led to its decline, reviews failed later attempts for its revival and then discusses cultural and social reformation needed for it to flourish in today's Muslim societies.  The has been well-received by scholars and the author was interviewed on the BBC Radio4.  Further information on this book can be found in the website: www.scienceunderislam.com.

The writing of this book was prompted by his interest in science, his concern at the current Muslim weakness, and his search to find a way that can inspire Muslims to play a major role in the science and technology driven 21st century, the role that they once played in the past in their Golden Age. These very same reasons have motivated him to launch this reformist group and website: www.muslimreform.org, focussing on CAMSAM (campaign for more science among Muslims).
